What you should know about LANAP – Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure
Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure to is one of the best treatment for Periodontitis, otherwise known as Gum disease which advances once excessive bacteria starts building up within the mouth. If this condition is not promptly treated, it can eventually lead to more damaging problems to the surrounding gum tissue, as well as result in tooth loss.
Dentists have been battling with the realities of periodontal diseases on a day-to-day basis since its inception. In the bygone age, the periodontal disease was difficult to treat and maintain with the use of traditional surgical methods, of course, the treatment was not impossible. But once the periodontal disease was treated based on older concepts, the relapse was common.
Then came the advent of LANAP (Laser-assisted new attachment procedure) – Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is a non-surgical therapy for the treatment of periodontitis, intended to work through regeneration rather than a surgical procedure of debridement. The following article will shed more light on what LANAP treatment is all about and why should one opt for this treatment.
This is how the laser works –
The laser consists of neodymium (Nd) atoms in a yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal. When the neodymium is sparked with a jolt of electricity, it emits infrared light with a wavelength of exactly 1064 nanometers. The laser light is then directed accurately and precisely at the infectious or diseased tissue via a very small fiber optic. This light (laser energy) is transmitted through normal cells, which then selectively removes diseased or infected pocket epithelium from the underlying connective tissue.
This procedure is the most beneficial procedure when compared to any procedures requiring traditional flap access as it preserves the healthy tissues around the teeth, also, the laser energy is quite selective for diseased tissue, hence the underlying pleuropotential connective tissue is left unharmed, thereby permitting healing and regeneration rather than degeneration.
Why should you opt for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP)?
LANAP offers you a regenerative treatment, i.e., it helps regenerate healthy tissues to stimulate reattachment of the gums to the teeth – and prevent infection from moving back in, more so, it is comfortable, more cosmetic, less invasive, and less expensive with results that are exceptionally high.
